Organic Crib Mattress and Bedding Advice

  • Safe Baby Sleep

1. Why is it so important to get the right mattress for my baby?
Sleep is the single most important ingredient to a healthy, happy life, for both parents and baby. Without sleep, energy levels drop, immune systems crash and tempers flare. Natural Mat's organic mattresses have been proven to help babies sleep through the night and give you every reassurance that your baby sleeps comfortably and safely.
Points to consider:
- The mattress needs to be breathable. Natural Mat mattresses allow air to circulate through the mattress keeping the baby at a regular healthy temperture.
-  Our mattresses and bedding is 100% chemical free which means that your baby will not breathe any toxins in such as a chemical fire retardants or plastic toxins, which are found in other baby mattresses.
-  Your baby mattress needs to offer excellant support. The natural fibers in our mattresses are very resilient, durable and provide a natural spring, therefore offering superior support. They will not dip like other baby mattresses made of standard polyurethane foam.
-  If you are concerned about your baby having an allergy, our mattresses are natually non-allergenic and dust-mite free.

2. What are the hazards of standard baby mattresses?
-Packed full of chemicals which are bad for the babies skin and respiratory organs.
-Standard crib and cot standard mattresses are usually very thin.
-Offer no support and often dip very quickly. Natural Mat mattresses are made from natural materials which provide superior support and are naturally very resilient and durable.
-Most existing baby mattresses have a plastic cover which prevents air circulating through the mattress increasing the chances of the baby overheating. It is not only dangerous for a baby to over heat but also causes discomfort and disrupted sleep

3. Do I need a new mattress for each child?
The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) states that each baby should have a new mattress.

4. Do ‘Natural Mat’ mattresses pass the US safety standards?
Yes, of course. Safety is of paramount importance to us.  Natural Mat passes all fire regulations without the use of fire retardants or unnatural treatments in any part of the mattress.  Our mattresses comply to the new federal 16 CFR 1633 requirements and in fact surpass these requirements.

5. Do ‘Natural Mat’ mattresses have a plastic cover?
No. We cover our mattresses with an unbleached cotton herringbone for maximum breathability and comfort. The cover is removable and machine washable at 60°C. Most existing baby mattresses have a plastic cover, which prevents air circulating through the mattress increasing the chances of the baby overheating. It is not only dangerous for a baby to overheat but also causes discomfort and disrupted sleep.

6. If my baby is sick on the mattress how do I clean it?
If the bed linen is penetrated and the mattress cover is sullied then remove it and machine wash it at 60°C to kill any bacteria. All of our breathable mattress protectors and sheets are machine washable at 60°C for maximum hygiene - bacteria and dustmites are killed at 57°C.

7. Do I need a mattress protector? What bed linen do I need?
For new borns in cribs and Moses Baskets we recommend one of our flannelette sheets to protect the mattress and then a cotton sheet on top of this.  This creates a breathable double layer to protect the mattress and keep your baby more comfortable. This combination should absorb any sick, dribble and moisture etc. If the mattress cover is sullied then unzip remove and wash at 60°C to kill any germs. Bacteria and dustmites are killed at 57°C.  All of our protectors and sheets are machine washable at 60 degrees.

For 'sickly' babies and toddlers going through potty training we recommend our Breathable Mattress Protectors which is the most comfortable protector available.  It sits flat on the mattress and comes with elastic bands on the corners to hook over the mattress.

8. How do I wash & dry my Natural Mat sheets and protectors?
All of our flannelette protectors and cotton sheets are machine washable at 60°C. They are made slightly larger than the dimensions indicated to allow for a first wash shrink. You can also tumble dry and iron all sheets.

9. Do ‘Natural Mat’ mattresses need to be ‘turned’
The mattress fillings are naturally very resilient and durable but it is good practice to turn any mattress every 3 months.
